In the enchanted kingdom of Brooklyn, the fashionable people put on cute shoes, go to parties in warehouses, drink on rooftops at sunset, and tell themselves they’ve arrived. A whole lot of Brooklyn is like that now—but not Vassa’s working-class neighborhood.
In Vassa’s neighborhood, where she lives with her stepmother and bickering stepsisters, one might stumble onto magic, but stumbling away again could become an issue. Babs Yagg, the owner of the local convenience store, has a policy of beheading shoplifters—and sometimes innocent shoppers as well. So when Vassa’s stepsister sends her out for light bulbs in the middle of night, she knows it could easily become a suicide mission.
But Vassa has a bit of luck hidden in her pocket, a gift from her dead mother. Erg is a tough-talking wooden doll with sticky fingers, a bottomless stomach, and a ferocious cunning. With Erg’s help, Vassa just might be able to break the witch’s curse and free her Brooklyn neighborhood. But Babs won’t be playing fair…”

When I started reading this novel I didn’t  really know what to expect. I knew that it had a lot of good reviews, but I didn’t really know what kind of story it would be. However, I LOVED this book ! It is very Alice in Wonderland like, but a lot creepier and I truely recommend this novel!

Vassa in the Night is a fairy tale about Vassa, who is send to a magic convenience store and has to be careful not to be beheaded, because that happens a lot there. I won’t be telling you too much about what happens, but Vassa is going to try to break the witch’s curse and runs into all kinds of magical and weird things. All the weird stuff and people really made me think of Alice in Wonderland, even though Vassa in the Night is a lot more gruesome.

I loved the characters in Vassa in the Night! Not only is Vassa one badass chick, but I also really liked Erg, the magical doll, and the other characters, such as Night. Yes, Night is a characters and I think it is a very interesting one as well. I think all characters were really well rounded and had some good layers to them, so they were all interesting and lifelike. Also, I loved the characters Picnic and Pangolin! They are two lawyers and they are awesome and so, so weird!

The plot is also very well put together and  I read this novel very quickly. I think it’s because of all the weirdness, but also because I really had no clue as to what was going to happen. It has also been written quite suspenseful and I think I will definitely look up other novels by this author, because it was really well written!

So all in all, I will recommend this novel to anyone who likes fairytales, horror stories or Alice in Wonderland!
